Port Wine by Francois Guichard (2004)

DCC381A6-CB16-4B24-B4BB-F6589B6FA591-256

A nice publication but its pages are mostly filled with pictures and is clearly a promotional item rather than a source of information.

Expensive to acquire.

Cellars of Gold – The Port Wine Heritage by Quidnovi (2012)

C752A340-C274-4D81-96C5-238427C4EED7-256

This book bears the logos of both the IVDP and AEVP, but it is not obvious whether or not they contributed to or sponsored its production.

Originally published in Portuguese, this is a very well presented, large-format book which gives a description of the shippers who are members of the AEVP, including their history, wines, principle quintas and lodges. The book also contains three large fold-outs containing a map of the quintas of the Douro, a vintage chart and the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia.

The book appears to be quite rare and expensive on the second-hand market, but is still available from the publisher for €29 at www.quidnovi.pt.

A Life in the Port Trade by James Symington (2007)

This short and amusing book was written by James Symington to record some of the events in his life and career as a member of the family business. The original publication is scarce, but a spiral bound, computer-generated reproduction is available from the shop at the Graham’s lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia for a mere €3.

A cute little pocket book produced by The Wine and Food Society as part of their “Wines of the World” series. An interesting and entertaining 10 minute read and containing a grading of all vintages from 1847 to 1946 on the scale “0 = no good, 7 = the best”.

First published in 1949, with a second edition in 1951.
