The British Factory Oporto by Elaine Sanceau (1970)

9FD350F0-E9D8-4751-994E-DCB203770B5D-256A nice little book dedicated to the glory days of the Factory House and its members.

Unfortunately, the quality of the printing/paper seems to be poor which has resulted in a shadow of the print from facing pages being transferred to one another throughout the book, making if difficult to read.

Baron Forrester, Sense and Sensibility, A Story of the Douro, 1831-1861 (2008)

0F70DDD6-8068-4565-A79F-617E9AA4410C-256 Published by Offley Port and the Museu do Douro as a guide to the museum’s inaugural exhibition in 2008.

This is a fabulous large format book that is packed full of information about Joseph James Forrester, Port, the Douro and the Port trade. Beautifully illustrated, including photographs of many of the items from the exhibition, this book was very kindly gifted to me by Ligia Marques of Sogrape Vinhos during a visit to Quinta do Boa Vista in 2012.

Oporto et ses Vins by Alfred Smyth (1900)

88D01FF8-124E-48C5-881C-8C109C8C08A7-256A special edition, limited to 216 numbered copies for sale, published as part of “The Douro Series”, by The Port Lover’s Library (Isaac Oelgart).

Originally published in French in 1900, this English translation by Norma R. Shakun was published in 1999.

This short booklet appears to have been part of the author’s contribution to exhibiting the wines of Offley, Forrester and Co. at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris. An interesting read, containing a number of descriptions of the people and culture of Oporto and the Douro that I have not encoutered in other books.
