Croft Port by The Fladgate Partnership (2008)

668830D6-A997-4C8E-A890-FE6EF91BA3B4-256

This book provides a concise history of the house of Croft plus a record of The Great Croft Tasting (20 vintages from 1900 to 2003) that was attended by Richard Mayson, Roy Hersh and many other Port wine critics.

A nicely presented booklet, which doubles as a promotional item.

Port by Neil Mathieson & Doug McIvor (1999)

FDF8639F-35A1-4D9C-BE17-EAB1209BE541-256

A lightweight introduction to port that appears to have been written with the complete novice in mind.

The book consists of a brief history and description of Port and a one-page summary of a significant number of prominent shippers. Roughly half of the book consists of near life-size pictures of Port bottles.

Roger Voss’ Guide to Port and Sherry (1993)

F4D5CAF5-6D83-42F1-8C31-2126CBAB0E9E-256

I have not yet read this book but it looks to be a useful reference in that it has a directory of Port shippers which includes a brief history of each along with notes of the quintas owned and vintages declared since 1945.

Port Wine: Notes on its History, Production and Technology by A. Moreira da Fonseca, A. Galhano, E. Serpa Pimentel and J. R.-P. Rosas (1981)

481C5B4F-F7E6-4A74-AB25-3857193E1433-256The rights to this book rest with Edicao do Instituto do Vinho do Porto who published it in 1981, 8 years after the work was finished. The delay in publishing was due to the demise of the original sponsors, the Gremio dos Exportadores de Vinho do Porto. The preface says that no funds were available to publish the book until 1981. I have not yet read this book but it seems to provide lots of information and statistics relating to how the quality of vineyards and wines are assessed. There is also a section listing and describing the various Port-related Acts which came into affect between 1755 and 1967. A very useful reference.

Croft: A Journey of Confidence 1678-1978 by Oliver Knox (1978)

D6DAF7A7-99CA-4C24-B6B2-E2EF790217A7-256

This is an interesting account of the history of the company but is more of a promotional item than a book about Port.

An extract from the Acknowledgements reads: “This book has been commissioned by the Directors of Croft & Co. Ltd. to celebrate the Tercentenary of the company in 1978″. However, The Fladgate Partnership claim to have evidence that the company dates back an additional ninety years to 1588.
