The Wines of Portugal by Herbert Warner Allen (1963)

11B1DE20-0941-426C-91D7-4F8B297CA27A-256

This is a very interesting book. Most of the pages are dedicated to the history and production of Port with a few at the end covering the other major wines of Portugal, such as Madeira and Sebutal. Highly recommended.

Wines of Spain and Portugal by Jan Read (1973)

429A54C2-F425-45A6-8C4D-EF5AB82832A9-256

Published 1973, the bulk of this book is taken up by Spanish Wines and Port, with the other Portuguese regions very much taking a back seat. To be fair to the author, she consciously corrected that position in her later work, The Wines of Portugal, published in 1982.

The Wines of Portugal by Jan Read (1987)

F277E880-E511-4224-867E-AE8FEB0F4570-256From the outset the author acknowledges that Portuguese wines have not had the same attention as Port, and this book attempts to correct that position. An interesting read but I prefer May’s books on the subject.

Published 1982, plus a revised edition in 1987.

Portugal’s Wines and Wine-makers by Richard Mayson (1992)

B375F73F-4EF9-4AFB-A04F-D06863BFAE36-256

A great read covering all of the principal wine regions of Portugal.

The chapter on Port obviously contains some overlap with Mayson’s later works but this is a nice book to own as most of its focus is on the other wines of Portugal and the people who make them.

The Wines and Vineyards of Portugal by Richard Mayson (2003)

018D8BDF-0C09-4227-96EE-23F53FE713B4-256

Unusually for books of this genre, Port only takes up 14 of the 386 pages, so this is perhaps a good option for those more interested in the diversity of dry wines of Portugal. The book, which I have not yet read, won the André Simon Award for Drink Book of the Year in 2003, the year of publication.
