Notes on a Cellar-Book by George Saintsbury (1920)

AEB2FC3C-B62C-4DF3-AC17-CEF78A7C810F-256

A note on the dust jacket of the 2008 re-print of this book describes it as “one of the greatest tributes to drink and drinking in the literature of wine.” It isn’t wrong. The 1st edition from 1920 is nice to own but the 2008 version is perhaps better value in terms of the volume of information and commentary from Thomas Pinney.

Wine and the Wine Lands of the World by Frank Hedges Butler (1926)

9588C6E9-5F20-4128-BC21-D1AE6992D575-256

A great book written by a very colourful character from the turn of the century. Although only 10 pages are dedicated to Port this is definitely worth having in a collection.

The author was at one time a partner in the family firm Hedges & Butler, Wine Merchants of Regent Street, London.

Wayward Tendrils of the Vine by Ian Maxwell Campbell (1947)

126FB7A2-EEBB-49E0-AF08-E7D3E6297A32-256

This is the memoirs of the author, a London wine merchant in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and contemporary of André L. Simon and Charles Walter Berry.

This is a fascinating book, which contains a chapter on the time the author spent with the great and the good of the Port trade during his time in Oporto.

Published as a limited edition of 750 copies in 1947.

Wine into Words: A History and Bibliography of Wine Books in the English Language by James M. Gabler (1985)

F2D0EEF2-02E6-46D6-BA56-56BFBF8317BC-256

This is a modern day and more comprehensive equivalent to André L. Simon’s Bibliotheca Vinaria and is a fantastic book to own if you are interested in building a collection of books about wine as it lists over 3,200 of them.

This is a very high quality publication by Bacchus Press.

A revised and enlarged edition was published in 2003 but I prefer this edition.

The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook (2012)

521D72E5-1360-48F1-9738-48A14111FD1D-256A large tome with fantastic descriptions of the history, the people and the wines of each Château.

Very clearly laid out and bang up to date with useful comments on lots of the recent vintages that are still widely available today. The best book I own on the subject of Bordeaux by a considerable stretch.

The Billionaire’s Vinegar: The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine by Benjamin Wallace (2008)

7EEF9D65-2E21-4EB6-B413-DCBA90006CAB-256This is the story of the circumstances, scandal and personalities surrounding the infamous “Lot 337″, a bottle of Chateau Lafite 1787 bearing the initials “Th. J.” and said to have been found in a cellar that might once belonged to Thomas Jefferson, which sold at £50,000 at Christie’s on 5 December 1985.

A fascinating story and a highly entertaining read.

Michael Broadbent’s Pocket Vintage Wine Companion: Over Fifty Years of Tasting Over Three Centuries of Wine (2007)

1DC04206-4583-483F-A421-A86B4A3ACDAA-256

A (large) pocket-sized version of Broadbent’s classic “Vintage Wine”.

The pocket version has new tasting notes for recent vintages and also has many updates to the notes from the original book. The new book was published in 2007 and brings this excellent reference up to date.

This edition is obviously more up to date but I prefer the production quality of the first edition.

Michael Broadbent’s Vintage Wine (2002)

04BC3F13-58FD-4E18-A449-D0E7311D4340-256This volume superseded the author’s similar earlier works under the title The Great Vintage Wine Book.

A fantastic big book with thousands of tasting notes on almost every vintage wine you can think of. The vintage port tasting notes on pages 449 to 494 are amongst the most well read and frequently visited pages in my collection of books.

You’ve just got to have one of these!
