Reminiscences of a Port Shipper 1930-1975 by Wyndham Fletcher (1997)

8C1F6CF0-EFC9-40C9-910F-9BC21E7CF971-256Wyndham Fletcher was Managing Director of Cockburn Smithes & Co. in London until his retirement in 1975. This brief account of his time in the Port trade gives a very interesting description of the workings of the trade and the styles of Port available in the years prior to the change in the law regarding the shipment and bottling of Port outside Portugal. This is a very nice item to own and it contains some very interesting and amusing anecdotes that I have not seen in any other publication.

A special edition, limited to 240 numbered copies for sale as part of “The Portonian Series”, commissioned and published by The Port Lover’s Library (Isaac Oelgart) and signed by the author.

This short booklet provides an interesting and informative account of the Port trade’s recovery from the ravages of WWII, through the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 and its re-emergence in the final decades of the twentieth century.

Forrester and The Douro by Richard Mayson (2006)

Scan 2Part of a set published by the Port Lover’s Library titled “Joseph James Forrester and His Maps“.

The book contains three interesting essays, the first being a 32 page account of Forrester’s life and times in Portugal and as a member of the port trade followed by two shorter essays “Forrester’s Maps of the Douro River” by Debbie Hall and “Forrester the Delineator” by Issaac Oelgart.

The Wines of Portugal by Herbert Warner Allen (1963)

11B1DE20-0941-426C-91D7-4F8B297CA27A-256

This is a very interesting book. Most of the pages are dedicated to the history and production of Port with a few at the end covering the other major wines of Portugal, such as Madeira and Sebutal. Highly recommended.

Portugal’s Wines and Wine-makers by Richard Mayson (1992)

B375F73F-4EF9-4AFB-A04F-D06863BFAE36-256

A great read covering all of the principal wine regions of Portugal.

The chapter on Port obviously contains some overlap with Mayson’s later works but this is a nice book to own as most of its focus is on the other wines of Portugal and the people who make them.

The Wines and Vineyards of Portugal by Richard Mayson (2003)

018D8BDF-0C09-4227-96EE-23F53FE713B4-256

Unusually for books of this genre, Port only takes up 14 of the 386 pages, so this is perhaps a good option for those more interested in the diversity of dry wines of Portugal. The book, which I have not yet read, won the André Simon Award for Drink Book of the Year in 2003, the year of publication.

8D6EACF3-C125-4D16-8884-6F85F1BCB43F-256 This large volume contains 380 pages of good information on all things to do with Port. For some reason this seem to be a reasonably expensive book but worth having for the serious collector.

Vintage Port, James Suckling (1990)

1C63DE71-4B8E-4CF1-83B9-4E81C85DA0E6-256

A comprehensive review of five years of research tasting the wines of over fifty shippers with tasting notes, Wine Spectator scores, release prices and histories of the shippers.

I really like this book and it is one of my “go-to” references when I want to know who declared what when. The text, tasting notes, scores etc are all now very dated but it is still a useful book to have in a collection.

Port, an Introduction to its History and Delights, Wyndham Fletcher (1978)

9800D521-853A-4E9F-B768-391FF92EE84F-256

This is one of my favourite books about port. Whilst now out-of-date, it is written by a man who obviously has a great passion for the subject and a wealth of experience built up over many years working in the industry. Well worth owning a copy for the vintage descriptions and listings alone but also a very enjoyable read.

Port: How to Buy, Serve, Store and Drink It, William J. Todd (1926)

1AB400B6-2308-4AB6-BFBB-B55B1FABC123-256

This is a great little book that includes a fold-out chart measuring around 12 inches (30cm) square described as “A Diagrammatic Summary of Port Imports from 1678 to the Present Day” and headed “Curves of Port Imports Plotted for every Decade from 1678 to 192-”.

A very interesting and amusing book, which is generally available at modest cost.
