The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook (2012)

521D72E5-1360-48F1-9738-48A14111FD1D-256A large tome with fantastic descriptions of the history, the people and the wines of each Château.

Very clearly laid out and bang up to date with useful comments on lots of the recent vintages that are still widely available today. The best book I own on the subject of Bordeaux by a considerable stretch.

Bordeaux: A New Look at the World’s Most Famous Wine Region by Oz Clarke (2012)

1E5A46DB-0116-4124-BD68-4506630B61B9-256A beautifully presented book with a wealth of information on the Bordeaux regions and their wines. For each region there is a list of “affordable wines to try” which extremely useful for those like me who cannot fill a cellar with First Growths!

Notes on a Cellar-Book by George Saintsbury (2008)

65C7AB18-4626-4D1E-A375-F0A3DF016BD4-256

A note on the dust jacket of this book describes it as “one of the greatest tributes to drink and drinking in the literature of wine.” It isn’t wrong.

The 1st edition from 1920 is nice to own but the 2008 version is perhaps better value in terms of the volume of information and commentary from Thomas Pinney.

The Billionaire’s Vinegar: The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine by Benjamin Wallace (2008)

7EEF9D65-2E21-4EB6-B413-DCBA90006CAB-256This is the story of the circumstances, scandal and personalities surrounding the infamous “Lot 337″, a bottle of Chateau Lafite 1787 bearing the initials “Th. J.” and said to have been found in a cellar that might once belonged to Thomas Jefferson, which sold at £50,000 at Christie’s on 5 December 1985.

A fascinating story and a highly entertaining read.
