Drinking with Dickens by Cedric Dickens (1980)

84619B64-9C50-4EBC-8279-7D1F79F67642-256

A fun read, recounting the drinking habits of one of the most famous lovers of Vintage Port in history. The book was written by Cedric Dickens, the great-grandson of Charles.

A limited edition was published in August 1980 and a second edition in December. I presume the contents are the same but the presentation might be different.

Wine for sale: Victoria Wine and the Liquer Trade, 1860-1984 by Asa Briggs (1985)

27835341-830F-44BE-BF08-EBD8ABBE2218-256

The story of Victoria Wine, a company that grew from a single shop in Mark Lane, London in 1865 to over 900 shops by the time this book was published.

Sadly, it went out of business a few years ago along with many other drinks chains in the UK. The company brand still exists but is now part of a French conglomerate.

On a personal note, “Vicky Wines” is where my friends an I used to buy our booze when we were too young to be doing so.

The Great Vintage Wine Book by Michael Broadbent (1985)

0E377BF5-9F41-4674-8BBF-FFF1C53771C3-256Published in 1983, this book would eventually be superseded by a second edition in 1991 and ultimately by Broadbent’s classic, Vintage Wine in 2002.

The 2002 edition is the best of the series and is something no vintage wine lover should be without.

Guinness Book of Wine Lists by Robert Joseph (1985)

EE8616A5-5C19-42A5-9A3A-C2D18B847E7F-256

The foreword opens with:

“This is a very different kind of wine book. It is almost certainly the first to list and describe all of the wine producing countries in the world – from Albania to Zimbabwe, describing in detail well over a thousand wines and their producers; it is also the only wine book to include information on both Queen Victoria’s favourite aphrodisiac and the world’s first nude wine tasting.”

Not yet read.

Wine into Words: A History and Bibliography of Wine Books in the English Language by James M. Gabler (1985)

F2D0EEF2-02E6-46D6-BA56-56BFBF8317BC-256

This is a modern day and more comprehensive equivalent to André L. Simon’s Bibliotheca Vinaria and is a fantastic book to own if you are interested in building a collection of books about wine as it lists over 3,200 of them.

This is a very high quality publication by Bacchus Press.

A revised and enlarged edition was published in 2003 but I prefer this edition.
