A History and Description of Modern Wines by Cyrus Redding (1833)

3122EB77-12BE-416E-ABF1-3EB968501CCE-256This is a very heavy read but contains lots of statistical tables in the appendices with interesting data from the the 1700s and early 1800s.

There are two modern limited edition re-prints of this book that are also listed on this site and also a number of print-on-demand editions available.

A History and Description of Modern Wines by Cyrus Redding (1833)

589FDEEC-C558-4D7F-902D-99FBDF918320-256

This is a high quality facsimile reproduction of the 1833 first edition published by Andrew Low Fine Wines in 1980 in an attractive green half-leather binding.

This is a far superior book to those that are printed on demand and is currently available for around £30. A very good alternative to the far more expensive original.

History of Ancient and Modern Wines by Alexander Henderson (1824)

38D9DA92-1781-40D0-B049-83D511E15142-256Published in 1824, this is one of the earliest comprehensive books on wine written in the English language, and has invariably featured in the bibliography of any serious book about the history of wine and wine-making since it was written. There is a significant chapter on Port wine.

This volume is from a 500 copy limited edition re-print published by the Bacchus Press in 1979.

This is one of the very few ancient books on wine that has not yet been made available as a mass-market facsimile re-print.

Past Present & Probably the Future State of the Wine Trade by James Warre (1823)

EB1380E4-941A-4A37-9479-198EF47F4BE4-256

This print-on-demand edition actually contains a number of contemporaneous books on the same subject bound together in one large volume. The core of the subject is taxation and its effect on the British wine trade with various producing nations across the world. An interesting insight into what appear to be troubled times.

A Treatise on Adulterations of Food and Culinary Poisons by Friedrich Christian Accum (1820)

08E18193-D289-4583-B626-6F979EFB1AC2-256The majority of this treatise focuses on the adulteration of various foods but it contains a long chapter on the adulteration of various wines, including Port wine. A very interesting read.

Published 1820, this is a good quality facsimile reproduction from 1966 which is much better than the more recent print-on-demand editions.
