The History of Champagne by André L. Simon (1962)

BE040750-B84E-4EE9-BC17-CEA100EF11E3-256This book is an update on Simon’s first major work “The History of the Wine Trade in England” that was published in 1905. Essential reading for bubbly fans!

My copy is from the first edition, which is a large format and very well made book, which are not common features of many of this author’s works.

Wines of the World by André L. Simon (1967)

63DA429D-1B6D-43DA-96CE-694E39CDC26B-256This book now looks very outdated but is still an interesting reference. Each wine region is covered by an expert of the day, Wyndham Fletcher providing the chapter on Portugal, including Port, with the entire work being edited by André L. Simon.

This large volume was subsequently revised and re-issued by Serena Suttcliffe in 1981.

The International Wine and Food Society’s Gazetteer of Wines by André L. Simon (1972)

AB144B20-B6E6-4BA0-9578-8C224E32A435-256

The Foreword says:

“When André L. Simon died in 1970 he had written more than seventy books on wine and gastronomy. The Gazetteer of Wines was his last work. This book which describes in some detail the major wines, wine-producing countries and vineyards of the world, as well as the lesser-known ‘local’ growths, was the fruit of a lifetime’s study and research.

At the time of his death the Gazetteer was completed but needed revising. During the past two years friends of André Simon, both those who knew him personally and those who knew him by reputation only, have been working to update and verify the information contained in this monumental work.

This task is now complete, and the Gazetteer of Wines stands not only as a unique index of world viticulture, but as a final tribute to André L. Simon.

This is the memoirs of the author, a London wine merchant in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and contemporary of André L. Simon and Charles Walter Berry.

This is a fascinating book, which contains a chapter on the time the author spent with the great and the good of the Port trade during his time in Oporto.
