Port – Wines of the World Pocket Library, by André L. Simon (1949)

54925C4D-A260-49F2-B96B-3E46D4AF6239-256

A cute little pocket book produced by The Wine and Food Society as part of their “Wines of the World” series. An interesting and entertaining 10 minute read and containing a grading of all vintages from 1847 to 1946 on the scale “0 = no good, 7 = the best”.

First published in 1949, with a second edition in 1951.

The Wines and Vineyards of Portugal by Richard Mayson (2003)

018D8BDF-0C09-4227-96EE-23F53FE713B4-256

Unusually for books of this genre, Port only takes up 14 of the 386 pages, so this is perhaps a good option for those more interested in the diversity of dry wines of Portugal. The book, which I have not yet read, won the André Simon Award for Drink Book of the Year in 2003, the year of publication.

Port, André L. Simon (1934)

This book is one of a series of small handbooks forming “Constable Wine Library”, covering the principle wines of Champagne, Claret, Madeira, Port  and Sherry.

Nice to have if you find a cheap copy.

Port Wine and Oporto, Ernest Cockburn (1949)

FED855ED-15DB-4C9A-9E18-566D5A7C0221-256

Published in 1949, this is a serious collector’s item. Very rare and a mine of information going back to the middle of the 19th century. According to André L. Simon this book was not professionally edited, and it is not difficult to agree with that assessment as there is no usable index and the subjects are covered in a “brain-dump” fashion throughout the book. That said, it is packed with information that will be of interest to port enthusiasts.

Copies of this book are not cheap, but are worth the expense for those with serious interest in the subject.

Bottlescrew Days, André L. Simon (1926)

This book is generally regarded as the missing 4th volume in The History of the Wine Trade in England series. A fascinating insight into the drinking habits of the English aristocracy and the general public during the 18th century. War, corruption, piracy, more war and lots and lots and lots of wine just about sums up that period in history!
