This is a fabulous collection of Port exclusives created by Isaac Oelgart of The Port Lover’s Library.

The product includes a full-sized, high-quality reproduction of the original 10-foot map, a full-sized reproduction of the smaller map and three specially commissioned essays. A real Port collector’s item!

The photograph shown above includes a regular sized bottle of port to give you an idea of the scale of this publication. Below is a copy of the rolled version of the map that is now framed and hanging in my sitting room…

Oporto et ses Vins by Alfred Smyth (1900)

88D01FF8-124E-48C5-881C-8C109C8C08A7-256A special edition, limited to 216 numbered copies for sale, published as part of “The Douro Series”, by The Port Lover’s Library (Isaac Oelgart).

Originally published in French in 1900, this English translation by Norma R. Shakun was published in 1999.

This short booklet appears to have been part of the author’s contribution to exhibiting the wines of Offley, Forrester and Co. at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris. An interesting read, containing a number of descriptions of the people and culture of Oporto and the Douro that I have not encoutered in other books.

Port and the Empire by Herbert Warner Allen (1925)

25F7206A-6097-4F40-86B3-B18AF4BF6115-256This interesting little book is a series of short articles penned by the author in the summer of 1925. Having read it cover to cover,  I must confess that I see absolutely no connection between the contents and the title.

Originally published in 1925 or 1926, this facsimile was produced as a special edition, limited to 180 numbered copies for sale, published as part of “The Douro Series” in 1997 by The Port Lover’s Library (Isaac Oelgart).

Pure Port Wine by an unknown author (1884)

This small booklet was produced by E. Lamontagne and Sons of New York, who appear to have been the United States and Canada agents for Sandeman.

The book contains some interesting insights to the production and shipping of Port in the late 19th century and contains a number of full-page illustrations by Henry Vizetelly.

Originally published in 1884, this facsimile edition was published in 1996.

This little booklet provides a fascinating insight into the use of Port wines in the late 19th century. As the title suggests, its main focus is the care, treatment and serving of the wines.

The author, Hermann Lorenz Feuerheerd, was a Partner and Manager of the Port shipper Diedrich Matthais Feuerheerd, Jnr., & Co. of Oporto.

Originally published in 1899, this edition was published in 1996.
