Port and the Douro, Richard Mayson (2013)

portandthedouroOriginally published in 1999 with a second edition in 2004 (UK) and 2006 (USA). The new edition of 2013 is far superior to all editions that have gone before and in my view is beyond any doubt “The Bible of Port Wine”. The 2013 edition is much improved and expanded both in terms of the quality of production and, more importantly, the currency of the information contained within its pages. The earlier editions are nice to have for a collector but the 2013 edition is what every port lover needs.

Mayson’s intimate knowledge of the country, its people and its wines is impressive and gives the book great weight and credibility. The book is very useful in terms of understanding the production processes and the various styles of port and is a great aid to those wanting to buy and drink vintage port. The vintage reviews and shipper profiles contained in the book have stood the test of time and can be relied upon as some of the best information available on the subject. No port library is complete without this book!

Croft Port by The Fladgate Partnership (2008)

668830D6-A997-4C8E-A890-FE6EF91BA3B4-256

This book provides a concise history of the house of Croft plus a record of The Great Croft Tasting (20 vintages from 1900 to 2003) that was attended by Richard Mayson, Roy Hersh and many other Port wine critics.

A nicely presented booklet, which doubles as a promotional item.

Forrester and The Douro by Richard Mayson (2006)

Scan 2Part of a set published by the Port Lover’s Library titled “Joseph James Forrester and His Maps“.

The book contains three interesting essays, the first being a 32 page account of Forrester’s life and times in Portugal and as a member of the port trade followed by two shorter essays “Forrester’s Maps of the Douro River” by Debbie Hall and “Forrester the Delineator” by Issaac Oelgart.

As far as I am aware this book is not available to be purchased separately.

Portugal’s Wines and Wine-makers by Richard Mayson (1992)

B375F73F-4EF9-4AFB-A04F-D06863BFAE36-256

A great read covering all of the principal wine regions of Portugal.

The chapter on Port obviously contains some overlap with Mayson’s later works but this is a nice book to own as most of its focus is on the other wines of Portugal and the people who make them.

The Wines and Vineyards of Portugal by Richard Mayson (2003)

018D8BDF-0C09-4227-96EE-23F53FE713B4-256

Unusually for books of this genre, Port only takes up 14 of the 386 pages, so this is perhaps a good option for those more interested in the diversity of dry wines of Portugal. The book, which I have not yet read, won the André Simon Award for Drink Book of the Year in 2003, the year of publication.
